"My precious flower"?
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

very possable .. :D
mjkj 30th Apr 2014, 1:25 AM edit delete reply

I think that should be: "My little flower..."

I guess they added "flora" to the new rome dictionary as a female flower because the original latin "flos / floris" for flower is masculine...

Tokyo Rose 30th Apr 2014, 2:54 AM edit delete reply

In universe: Keep in mind that Lamod is NOT classic Latin. Linguistic drift and loanwords do weird things.

Out of universe: We've made no secret of the fact that neither of us is a Latin scholar. I actually go out of my way to *avoid* having to use foreign languages in-panel, specifically because I get tired of being called out for "inaccuracies" in a language that I myself kit-bashed in the first place. I get the Lamod lines to GEFGW* standards and continue telling the story rather than spending hours doing in-depth linguistic study for a couple of throwaway lines.

*Good Enough For Government Work

PS: Yes, it's "My little flower". See also: what he called Irene a couple pages ago. :D
Miyto 30th Apr 2014, 3:48 AM edit delete reply
I kind of like the Lamod 'happy accidents' that show up.

Mjkj's assumption felt right, particularly with Spanish using female tensing for many flowers ('rosa' being the one that comes to mind first). It kind of made a lot of little cultural tidbits click (such as New Rome being geographically near where mexico was, heck colorado is still close enough for that sort of cultural mixing)
mjkj 30th Apr 2014, 4:48 AM edit delete reply

Hey, Rose, I was not complaining - just stating that the language changed in regard to ancient latin!

...and yes, I am also more interested in the story than in the accuracy of lamod-latin in regard to ancient latin.
Mayyday 30th Apr 2014, 6:13 AM edit delete reply

The government only asks for an 80% solution to a given problem. If you can get it 80% right, you're done.
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 6:15 PM edit delete reply

Actually Mayy that is wrong. They ASK for 150% solutions... When that proves unfeasible they SETTLE for 80%... but hand out performance appraisals against what they asked for. :-p
Computant 14th Aug 2016, 5:36 PM edit delete reply
Interestingly enough, the US government used to have very strict standards of quality for good sold to the military or other branches. It led to a standard called "Good enough for government work," indicating the highest quality (what we might call 6 sigma today if folks back then could have gotten that good).
Folks started to complain about how much more the government paid for items than civilians would have, so the government scrapped that standard, and actually ended up accepting stuff civilians wouldn't have take, which led to the "Good enough for government work" standard becoming the joke it is today.
That said, if you wonder why the government paid $500 for a hammer, it was a 6 foot long titanium (non-sparking) hammer used to loosen lug nuts in a fueling area for the air force. If you wanna make a spark in a fuel-air mixture, just make sure you do it far from me, I'll pay $500 for the non-sparking hammer. It wasn't the sort of hammer you could buy at home depot.
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 2:54 AM edit delete reply

I think so.. Rose came up with that dialouge :D I think it is My precious flower..

EDIT - I stand corrected .. thank you Rose :D :D

For a moment I thought it would be Peppermint Schnapps.
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 12:56 AM edit delete reply

That might be later .. :D
plymayer 30th Apr 2014, 1:56 AM edit delete reply

Peppermint schnapps is good for me. Or rather I like it. It is not actually good for me.
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 2:55 AM edit delete reply

I havent had that in ages.. I do remember peach Snappes UGH I still feel ill when I smell it..
plymayer 30th Apr 2014, 3:35 AM edit delete reply

Peach snappes was the "in" drink in our shop in the early eighties.

Concur. Even the idea of the smell of it.... yuk.
Don B. 1st May 2014, 11:36 PM edit delete reply
Ah, schnapps. When you first try it, it's good. Doesn't take long to learn to hate it. Don't know why. Too sweet maybe?
mjkj 30th Apr 2014, 1:12 AM edit delete reply

Oh, the torture continues...

...now with chemical, biological or biochemical means...

I really love how they interact.

So, Irene got a damaged spine. Can they not repair it?

I wonder how she got it...

Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 2:55 AM edit delete reply

That will be answered .. I promise :D
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 5:26 PM edit delete reply

Interesting that Irene has something akin to the injury that Galina had. :-)

So if they could fix it back in Galina's time, I imagine that it is easy to fix now, mjkj. The problem is likely WHERE Irene lives, mjkj. I don't know about you but I don't think I would care HOW much money you offered, it isn't enough to come close to Douchebag.

Look what happened to Dr. Willis. Would you want to be a specialist and get near Nova Roma? Risk getting 'collected' by Douchebag, if he decided his realm would be enhanced by your inclusion, voluntary or not?

and I bet she hasn't noticed.

Nope she sure hasnt .. :D
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 5:31 PM edit delete reply

Good point, Cat.

Lynn's eyes have DEFINITELY been opened to a wider world than what she was exposed to in New Troy. And (I think) she has lost a lot of the attitude she had when she set out for New Sparta.

Peppermint and peach schnapps. I accomplished aversion therapy with that stuff in the Army. Cannot even be in the same room with an open bottle of it now.

I really like the water on skin effect, that must take a lot of time to do.
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 9:51 PM edit delete reply

hehe thanks for the compliment ion the skin effect it was kinda a pain :D
KarToon12 30th Apr 2014, 10:54 AM edit delete reply

I knew this sickeness thing was going somewhere. This comic has a habit of introducing things that don't seem important at first, but turn out to be something major later on. :)
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 9:51 PM edit delete reply

would I do that? LOL

AAaand here it comes at last.. the "I'm just trying to help" sex...
Difficult to predict who is going to jump whose bones first, at this point :-p
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 5:35 PM edit delete reply

Well you are aptly named, Mr. C. :-D

I guess we will wait and see, but I'm still thinking Acantha and Lynn are acting more like sisters than lovers. :-)

As far as who is jumping whose bones, that would Maxus on Irene I think. As that program is already in progress. :-D
cattservant 30th Apr 2014, 6:03 PM edit delete reply

Them rattling bones!
xpacetrue 30th Apr 2014, 8:28 PM edit delete reply

Hate to burst your bubble, Mr. C, but that seems -quite- unlikely. You must not have read the Author Notes for page 786. Tokyo Rose started off by saying,

"Been waiting for this page, because I have a terrible feeling that the first panel is likely to launch a thousand 'ships, and I wanted to have a nuclear stealth submarine waiting patiently at the harbor, ready to sink every last goddamn one with brutal salvos of anti-'shipping missiles and depth charges made of rage."

Personally, I'm glad. Largely, because Lynn and Kyle miss each other terribly. And, frankly, Acantha is too young. And the webcomic format is usually limited to a PG-13 rating (if that).

Anyway, it's nice to see these two become fast friends. And compassion should not automatically imply any attraction. (Some just have dirty minds. :P )

On the other hand, while we have seen romance in both DC and LS, I do not recall seeing a same-sex pairing... yet.

Well... there is Dr. Julia Willis. Aside from her obligation to do so, she appreciated watching Lynn shower in front of her. And it was strongly implied that she and her slave, Miraiko, share physical pleasure. But Miraiko is some sort of spy or undercover agent on assignment and likely plans to leave Dr. Willis' side soon. (Either that, or invite her to escape Nova Roma together.)
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 9:30 PM edit delete reply

I think it is listed as an R rating, xpace. For the occasional nudity and for the FREQUENT outbursts of profanity from Tokyo Rose. :-D
Centcomm 30th Apr 2014, 9:54 PM edit delete reply

ok spoilers time.. Lynn Taylor and Acantha will not be having sex. or anything like it. Shes 16.. Lynn is 18 and besides they are both into Boys.

Dr Julia Willis is a lesbian. and enjoys a relationship with Miriako

And as we just found out .. Irene and Maxus enjoy a bit of fun :D

Also TD and Ada are also "just friends" and wont be jumping in the sack togather :D

Also the comic is R rated for Violence / Sex/ Nudity and Language.. :D
xpacetrue 1st May 2014, 2:36 AM edit delete reply

That Acantha is into boys: That is a minor spoiler. But trying to dismiss the possibility of these two being together by saying they're into boys is an error in logic. (Just saying they're into boys would not exclude the possibility of them being into girls, too.) Just saying... ^_^

The rest: I don't think those are very spoiler-ish. Most of it is rather obvious. And the TD and Ada friendship was explained in comments before.

It's also not surprising that Dr. Willis likes her relationship with Miriako. But that does not preclude the possiblity that Miriako secretly feels differently about Dr. Willis. Miriako is deep undercover, as a slave, and -might- be doing whatever is necessary to keep Julia happy and keep her cover. (She might not love her. She might even find it unpleasant.) I guess we'll just have to wait a see if that is the case. -_^
Centcomm 1st May 2014, 2:40 AM edit delete reply

This is mostly to torpedo the shippers on Acantha and Lynn :D im a lot nicer than rose would be >_<
Stormwind13 1st May 2014, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

I get the feeling that Miriako likes Dr. Willis for real. That might not stop her from killing her if the need arose, but that would not be what Miriako wants to do.

In fact I'll wager that if the opportunity presents itself that Miriako will attempt to extract Dr. Willis from Nova Roma. :-) I think she cares enough for the Doctor to at least offer it. I mean, after the balloon goes up Nova Roma might not be the best place to be if you MIGHT have been involved in operations against Nova Roma.
xpacetrue 1st May 2014, 10:25 PM edit delete reply

@ Stormwind13

I hope so. Yes, I did get the impression that Miriako at least likes Dr. Willis as a person. And Acantha explained some of the horrors she was put through as a "toy" for Prince Duchebag and the fact that she was originally from New Sparta and was captured and sold, which I suspect Miriako knows and sympathizes with.

Though, I was pointing out how it's possible Miraiko was merely playing a role. We really can't tell if Miriako would like to stay in an intimate RELATIONSHIP with Dr. Willis, especially since we know so little.

The only thing that seems likely about it is that Miriako became a slave in Nova Roma to fulfill her mission and has no intention of remaining that way once it's completed. We don't know how Dr. Willis will react when she finds out. (Or does she already know?)

And, yes, Dr. Willis did seem to suggest she would leave Nova Roma if she could. Her being captured and sold there sure wasn't her plan. And she seems to hate a -lot- about the place, from how everything seems worn-out and outdated (esp. the medical equipment) to who's in charge and how the place is run.
Kitty 30th Apr 2014, 8:43 PM edit delete reply
Anybody notice that Lynn never really answered Acantha's question, "Didn't you ever bathe with your boyfriend"?
Stormwind13 30th Apr 2014, 8:56 PM edit delete reply

Dodge, dodge, dodge that question, Kitty. :-D She did a wonderful job redirecting around that question and distracting Acantha. :-)

Lynn was smarter than the average gutter sent after her (but unfortunately they were MUCH nastier).
