Is abstract rain just as wet?

[I do believe
they are negotiating
about applications.]
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:32 AM edit delete reply

yep it is just as wet LOL :D
KarToon12 2nd May 2014, 12:08 AM edit delete reply

The rain we've had so far this year hasn't been very gentle. :/
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:32 AM edit delete reply

<< arizona .. what rain? LOL
highlander55 2nd May 2014, 9:03 PM edit delete reply

Valley of the Sun! Stand on one side of the street and it's pouring on the other side. 4 Hours later it's sunny on that side and pouring on your side. Sheesh!!
jamie59 2nd May 2014, 12:17 AM edit delete reply

Damn she is sheltered. Stick her out in the middle of nowhere on a Harely in a thunder storm. Rain won't be abstract any more.
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:33 AM edit delete reply

yipes.. well technically. New Troy is in a southwest type environment .. but the city itself is totally climate controlled :D
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 11:10 AM edit delete reply

Heh, you should see what we here in Denmark call a Skybrud (literally means SkyBreak, often translated to CloudBurst).

It's insane.

Because Denmark is surrounded by water, we can get some pretty crazy humidity going, at the same time as both high and low hanging clouds - Then, if the upper stratosphere blows rain clouds in from one direction by a warmfront, and another lower set of clouds coming in from a coldfront, you suddenly have high humidity + 2 sets of rain clouds.

The end result is that if a lightning strikes along between the two sets of cloud layers, both of them open up and drop their rain in one fell swooop.
Alternatively, no lightning strike happen, but the upper cloudlayer starts raining, triggering the lower cloudlayer.
At the same time, the temperature drops, so the humidity condensates and adds to the rainfall.

Utter madness, I tell you.

You have not seen rain until you have seen something like that.
It can be so dense, that it feels difficult to breathe while standing in it.
It feels like there is almost more water than air.
Well, that's obviously not true, but it felt like it.

Luckily, we have some pretty good storm drains, so usually we only get small permanent damages when it happens. Though a few places do get flooded, because of old stormdrains that haven't been replaced yet. (it's in planning they say)

As I said, most of them are just small ones.
As a measure, if the busses don't stop, it's not that bad.
Props to the busdrivers though, not a single fuck was given as they sailed down the street. :)

On a sidenote, mobilityscooters don't like flooding, which kinda surprises me. I thought they were waterproofed.
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:44 PM edit delete reply

wow.. thats .. a lotta rain >_<
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 1:15 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, and to think most of that came down in less than an hour, it kinda boggles the mind.

Mind you, long running storms tends to create bigger flood due to sheer saturation of the drainage system.

Never mind high profile thunderstorms where you also have lightning strikes to contend with. During the day with the cloudburst I linked to, there was also a thunderstorm later on, with in excess of 5000 lightning strikes.

The poor guys in the fire department were busy as heck. At least they didn't have trouble finding water to throw at the fires. :)
Stormwind13 2nd May 2014, 4:35 PM edit delete reply

Holt, MO - 12" of rain, 42 minutes. That is the world's record for the fastest accumulation of rain.

Just think about that. Averaging 3 1/2 minutes per INCH of rain. :-p I wouldn't be shocked if animals died from that kind of barrage, drowned as the air basically turned into water.
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 6:07 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, the one I linked to was only 1.2 inches per ten minutes, so not nearly as heavy rainfall, but it went on for a while.

I think when they counted the daily precipitation, we had about 5 ½ inches of rain during that day .. offcourse, it didn't rain most of the day, so it's a bit misleading ... "only 5 inches" of rain, as most of it came within an hour.

The most unusual is the suddenness, with which is comes.
I think this video gives a little glimpse of the intensity of the rain.

I can only imagine what a rainfall three times as strong would be like.

Madness.
highlander55 2nd May 2014, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

I always wondered why people live in areas like that when should move somewhere that has better weather. Sometimes I bet the animals laugh to death watching us where and how we live.
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 9:58 PM edit delete reply

Oh, hey now, Denmark actually has fairly mild weather ...for a scandinavian country.

I know, I know, if you look at a globe, you'll find Denmark is north of all of the USA (except Alaska), but the sea all around us makes it quite mild ... again, admittedly, compaired to the rest of scandinavia. :)

It's all the others that are the problem, they keep hogging our winter to themselves, the selfish bastards.

We Danes want hard winters too!! >_<
Give them back !
JGibs_Evil_Twin 2nd May 2014, 12:21 AM edit delete reply

Summer rains in the Northeast US are about as gentle as a slap in the back of your head.

Great page as usual.
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:34 AM edit delete reply

heh ive been in a few hard rains before like when i was in Florida .. BOOM soaked. leaves you going what the heck just happened!
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 11:26 AM edit delete reply

I once ran into a skybrud in denmark while driving in a car, that was so sudden that it felt like driving into a huge puddle. Kinda like that odd sensation of driving into a deep layer of sand or mud that just saps any sort of momentum?

Had to pull over and wait for it to stop raining because the vipers couldn't turn fast enough to even remotely keep up. :D
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:42 PM edit delete reply

i haven't seen the water pile up like that in Florida but it came down Boom!
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 1:16 PM edit delete reply

Sounds like a small cloudburst, to me.

xpacetrue 2nd May 2014, 2:39 AM edit delete reply

Wow, talk about wet!

We could use some of that rain here in the Midwest as we're dry - and it's not even Summer. Most of the state is considered "abnormally dry" right now. I hope it doesn't get as hot & dry as 2 years ago, though. We lost a -lot- of grass and trees that year. I feel bad for southwest states, though. So many had to get rid of their cattle.

There must be reasons for the increase in extreme weather. And I don't buy all that El Nino, La Nina, sunpot activity, global warming B.S. They keep changing their explanations. I suspect climatologists either don't exactly know what's going on or they're not telling us the whole story.
velvetsanity 2nd May 2014, 3:21 PM edit delete reply

I'm pretty sure they don't completely know what's going on. However, I'm fairly certain that a number of things caused by the big quake in japan three years ago is a huge part of the weird weather that's happened since. One of the things that quake caused is a shift of several degrees in the earth's magnetic poles, which likely threw the axis of rotation off kilter (in which case it'll take time for things to settle down and the axis of rotation to realign to the magnetic poles)
xpacetrue 3rd May 2014, 2:00 PM edit delete reply

There's not been a big enough pole shift to account for weird weather. The latter has been going on for years, decades even. Here's some food for thought:

Also: The 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill may be altering the climate in North America. The amount of oil is mind-boggling. The oil is affecting phytoplankton, which absorbs CO2 and sunlight to produce most of the world's oxygen. And some suggest the "abnormally high temperatures" recorded in the Gulf is related. This may have altered local ocean currents, which has a direct and huge impact on climate:

Not sure where you are, xpacetrue; however, this part of Misery does NOT need any more rain right now. We are in a surplus over in St. Louie. :-) Of course, we were dry before we got like 3" or 4" of rain in the last couple weeks. And hail storms... and a few tornadoes... and windstorms too. :-p

Several million in damages I would guess. Spring time in the Midwest.

All the hot air in Washington, DC is causing the weird weather on the East coast.
Sheela 5th May 2014, 7:54 AM edit delete reply

Ah, but all the hot air in Washington DC comes from the politicians, who could be put to better use by powering up hot-air balloons.

YOu do not know me well stormy. There is only One thing I would NOT do for CEci.....and that's anything that would HURT her. Beyond that. I'd sign anything.
Stormwind13 4th May 2014, 11:16 AM edit delete reply

Never said you wouldn't do anything for CeCi Rash. Just that you need to watch for the repercussions of CentComm being nice for your birthday! :-D

So, then the chemical torture is about to commence.

Great update :D

Also great vote picture - CeCi ... it is quite a while since we saw her ... and nice gun...

Quite the incentive there. Are you guys re-working faces? She looks slightly different.,
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:36 PM edit delete reply

its full Ao lighting and a host of other tricks that make her look so nice. I use a cut down lighting rig for the comic - to try and speed up production.. but the one offs I can pretty much unload on :D

Ceci also has a Ponytail.. :D that IS diffrent :D

Out of curiosity - How long does the actual rendering take ?

One might begin to wonder if Acantha isn't enjoying this scenario a bit too much. Possibly getting her self ready to challenge her brother now she has allies.
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 11:33 AM edit delete reply

I'm certain she's enjoying it quite a bit ... after all, it's been a few days of general unpleasantness, so it must feel good to be able to unwind and let the hair down for a bit.
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:34 PM edit delete reply

she is having a bit of fun.. and as Sheela said as well this is all just fun teaseing.

Gadzooks! is this the textbook lesbian seduction scene, or what? Translation of her words, "Don't worry, i'll be gentle" :D

okay I know Centcomm said in prior page, "Also TD and Ada are also "just friends" and wont be jumping in the sack togather"
but... come on now. I guess you girls are just the tease twins. (and by that I mean Cent and Rose!)

In a nod to Tokyo Rose, is this the online gender-flipped equivalent, of the original derivation of "Yaoi", which while I dont recall the original Japanese, is said to mean "No Climax, No Point" (ie: eternal tease of sexual tension?)
X-}
Centcomm 2nd May 2014, 12:40 PM edit delete reply

hehe Have you ever watched girls tease each other? trust me it all looks like they are going to jump in the sack and they might.. to just sleep... period.

This is about comfort level.. :D
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 1:31 PM edit delete reply

Heh ... The Tease Twins, now there's an image. :D
Tokyo Rose 2nd May 2014, 6:57 PM edit delete reply

I have come to realize that short of putting everyone in full-body casts and having them never directly interact with each other, ever, it is impossible to avoid ship-teasing. Anybody who's ever been around (or ever been) a teenaged girl probably knows that they goof around like this a lot, without any actual sexual intent whatsoever.

And now we need a pic of a Cent doll and a Tokyo Rose avatar in the Wonder Twins outfits, don't we :D
Sheela 2nd May 2014, 7:20 PM edit delete reply

Yes, yes we do.
