Reverse date rape.

no kidding :D

And perhaps too successful. Someone down the line might be suspicious of the fast track access.

Also, let me point out something in a different direction. As I'm typing this, the current status of a few examples is

Questionable Content: $9070/month at Patreon, 51st on Top Web Comics
Gunnerkrig Court: $4344/month, 41st at TWC
Datachasers and Luna Star: $62/month, 24th and 27th on TWC

Mayhap it's just me but seems like that $62 is missing a couple zeros on the end. So, folks who aren't patrons, please consider changing that, eh? Patreon is quick and easy...
velvetsanity 25th Jul 2014, 8:53 AM edit delete reply

Once I have finances sorted a bit I'm planning on that and other means of support such as getting back to helping with content access. Might not be as much help with that as before (hard to actively hunt stuff down when I'm spending 11 hours a day moving freight and often only have my phone for net access) but I'll be restoring some level of assistance with it at least.
Sheela 25th Jul 2014, 10:38 AM edit delete reply

Well, you could say that Questionable Content went for what mattered first .... money.

But yeah, the Datachaser Patreon is a bit odd, though I have seen worse ... ie. patreons accounts that haven't managed to snag a single supporter after several months.

Those must hurt, though.

On a sidenote, it's not like Centcomm has done a lot of advertising for patreon - Most people don't read descriptions / comments. Youtube is a prime example of that, where even if you write who/what music is used in the description of a video, half the comments will still be "What music was that ?"
Centcomm 25th Jul 2014, 2:00 PM edit delete reply

Well its a bit hard to beg for money - And admittedly sometimes I think why would anyone give me money for this. and really I have the market sense of a dead anvil. im a artist not a sales person. Admittedly this has been allowing me to eat and get my meds ( mostly ) the patreon thing is something to try and give me a more or less stable income that I can plan a budget rather than going .. Um how far can I make this stretch.. each and every time .

Every single one of you are special - being able to help me is great but I want to entertain you all. hell that's why i started this comic is to tell a story . and im glad so many enjoy it-

The Best advertising is word of mouth. and that's where you come in folks. tell your friends and ect .. now a lot of people are thrown off by the CGI nature of the comic some downright dispise CGI

heres a quote from one such person from a fourm post

" There's nothing I hate more than CG comics done in programs like poser. They just look ugly, take seconds to slap together and almost all of them are downright creepy pornography. In recent years, these comics seem to be popping up like weeds. "

I use Daz Studio but I do use a lot of the same meshes. and I do try to avoid the creepy look. I dont hide the fact I use renders by burying them in a filter in photo shop . I just try to make them as good as I can - but this comic is and will be about the story. The art is a vehicle to tell the story. Period.

So in closing - I love you guys and all the support you give me .. be it just reading .. or commenting or voting or monetary aid. Its all good. HUGS!
Tokyo Rose 25th Jul 2014, 6:54 PM edit delete reply

Cent is usually after me to promote the comic more, but I also have absolutely no ability or desire to sell things; I lost out on a very good tech support job by admitting in interview that I was apprehensive about "upselling services", which was part of the required performance metrics.

(Also I have essentially zero social life and it's hard to actively "promote" anything when one doesn't talk to people or post on message boards or shit every random thought onto Facebook or Twitter or whatever.)

I'm firmly in the mindset that this is something we're doing for enjoyment, to tell a story, not to pander to a market. If people want to be generous and drop something in our donation tip jar, it's because they're awesome, not because we're using this project as a vehicle to make money first and tell our story second.
Speedy Marsh 4th Feb 2017, 2:09 PM edit delete reply
You probably dodged a bullet, by not getting that job. You probably would have ended up working in a department full of people who don't give a damn about the clients. In my opinion, Tech Support and Marketing should be even more separate than Church and State.

Anyhow, I wouldn't wanna be in the blast radius, when annual reviews came around, and you got marked down for not upselling.
velvetsanity 27th Jul 2014, 12:40 PM edit delete reply

You also don't "take seconds" to slap panels together

I"ve seen those comics which the commenter is referring to. No plot or story, nothing but stupid scripting and sex. I MUCH prefer what you and TR are doing. Good art, excellent plot and story, proper continuity, and a comment section and commenters that have no equals.

A dead anvil? As opposed to living ones?... Mayhap related to feral roses? ;-)

Wall of text coming up:

Having had some dealings with a couple of NGOs, I know that often the hardest thing to accept for people is that if you are hoping to get money from donations, you actually have to ask for it. There is no choice but to get over any hang-ups you might have regarding this.

You have been asking for help with meds etc. in the past -- why do you have trouble asking for help with the actual comic? It should be easier. It's not really begging: you are asking for compensation for the time you are spending on this; asking for the opportunity to continue doing it, for our benefit. Nothing wrong with that!

And don't give us any crap about your work not being good enough to be worth it. You can try that excuse with relatives or close friends, who are likely biased and might praise your work no matter what just to be supportive; but that doesn't apply to all those people who are coming here reading, voting, commenting, donating: they ended up doing it because they considered your work good in the first place. It's an undeniable fact -- so stop resisting it :-)

As for *how* to ask, I learned that it is most effective to ask for help with specific things. That makes people much more likely to chime in than if you are just asking for support in general. When you need some new hardware, that's a good occasion to ask for more patrons/donations. When you want to buy additional models for upcoming scenes, that's a good occasion to ask. When you need help to get something out of the way that reduces your effectiveness, ask. I think even rather indirect things, such as medications, are probably fine to mention, as long as it's specific, and you point out why it affects your work...

Of course the amount of donations hinges on the number of readers. My own impression is that DataChasers hasn't reached its full readership potential yet -- so more promotion is indeed in order. Word-of-mouth is good, but not sufficient.

Now I'm not an expert on this; but since I'm a confirmed smart-ass, I'll throw in some opinions nevertheless :-)

First of all, I think promotion through "social" media only works well for gag-a-day comics, where people often link and re-link individual particularly funny/fitting/quotable strips; while in a story-driven comic, individual pages rarely make sense out of context...

Some comics buy actual ads (e.g. on TWC); but I'm not sure this is really helpful. (I for one quite certainly haven't ever clicked any of these...)

Some participate in banner exchange communities, which might be somewhat helpful I think (I have *occasionally* clicked these, when the thumbnails were particularly pretty) -- though the question here is whether you are willing to clutter your site.

Some try to present their stuff at as many cons as possible. I suspect that helps some, if you have really nice posters to show -- but it's also pretty time-consuming and taxing, so not necessarily an efficient or even realistic option...
Guest 11th Oct 2016, 1:19 PM edit delete reply

There is the TWC ranking of course. DataChasers is pretty high up there nowadays -- but I fear it misses out on some potential readers due to the banner used, which quite frankly I consider seriously sub-par... And I don't only mean the low resolution. (TWC changed the banner format several months ago...)

I don't know about others; but for me, it was a major turn-off: although repeatedly seeing DataChasers high up in the ranking, it took a lot of time until I could finally get myself to give it a try. (And only because from experience I know that if something is so high up on TWC, there is *usually* more to it than meets the eye... How very true in this case.)

All that the banner shows is a very boring logo (sorry...); two nondescript CGI faces (while these two are obviously the main protagonists, they are just not very interesting visually...); and a gun. Along with the confusing title (I still haven't figured out what it's got to do with the story?...), it gives off the impression of some kind of sci-fi spy action thriller or so -- not something I would be interested in at all. While *technically* I guess that's not too far off the mark, it doesn't catch the spirit at all: to me, DataChasers is first and foremost a complex drama, garnished with a healthy dose of brilliant humour.

The description text catches the essence somewhat better; but it's kinda dull as well. Surely our highly revered writer can come up with better wording? :-)

(If I had to make a suggestion, I'd go with something along the lines of: "Humans, Androids, neurotic all-powerful AIs, social conflicts, high-tech combat, world domination: a complex universe full of action, drama, witty banter, heroics, erotics, and all the other feels"... As usual, I'm trying to cram way too much into it :-) )

Last but not least, I believe one of the best methods of promotion is submitting guest art to other comics you like. By now I found about a dozen other interesting comics directly or indirectly through links from DataChasers -- surely it works in the other direction as well :-) (Funny to see many of the same faces in various comment sections -- kinda feels like it's all one big family ;-) )

Actually I'd be more than happy to help support them once I get my own stuff on track, in fact I may soon be wanting to advertise a little something on here...
Hydrargyrum 27th Jul 2014, 11:56 AM edit delete reply

Oh my, sorry I touched a nerve.

Ain't right to have comics this good but be stretching every month though. (Offends my sensibilities as to what's just, if I may say so.) My experience with a couple small businesses of my own it doesn't have to be this painful. I've a few friends in marketing (some with businesses of their own) I'd be happy to chat with and get their input too. Rose, Cent, if you like you're welcome to shoot me a PM to see what sort of gentle, story first things we can ideate up.

If it helps, think of it as taking really good care of the fans.

So, this is quite old; but the situation hasn't really changed all that much: comparing Patreon income vs. TWC ratings for Questionable Content or Gunnerkrigg Court really makes no sense, considering that neither of these even have a vote button on their sites. (While they are both prominently featuring Patreon.)

Having said that, a glance through some of the top-rated entries at TWC indeed shows hugely varying Patreon success. I think in part that's because TWC rankings do not exactly match actual popularity: some comics more effectively rally their readership for the voting than others. Another important aspect is of course how long they have been on Patreon. And while I'm not entirely sure, my impression is that it also depends a lot on how seriously the creators take Patreon: some actually trying to make a living, so they can work on their comics full-time; while others are more like, everyone else is there, so let's join the fun...

"Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration initiated against one or more individuals without the consent of those individuals. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or against a person who is incapable of valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, or below the legal age of consent. The term rape is sometimes used interchangeably with the term sexual assault." (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

So the agent was trying to rape CeCi and she turned the tables on him. So he gets a warm and fuzzy (and false) memory. Better than he deserves, in my opinion.

Dolly has plans to revisit him before leaving Nova Roma. Have a short discussion (::BANG::) about abusing CeCi like he thinks he did. I hope Dolly gets the opportunity to castrate him with a high velocity round.
Computant 15th Aug 2016, 12:02 AM edit delete reply
I've always felt the proper punishment for a guy who rapes a woman in the future would be a nanotech sex change.
Gilrandir 15th Aug 2016, 1:00 AM edit delete reply
Do you imagine that that would prevent them from carrying out future such abuses? Or do you propose that they should be punished according to 'an eye for an eye'?

It doesn't seem to me that an involuntary sex change would be an appropriate response.

Nothing wrong with furries. Especially when you consider that everyone who's watched cartoons in the last 50 or so years is technically a furry fan (Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Yogi Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Disney's Robin Hood, etc)

I knew Ceci had some form of sexual subterfuge going on with that guard. It's incredibly funny that that doofus thinks he's had the time of his life when he's prolly gonna be skinned alive for giving Dolly and Ceci that pass and invite. Not exactly a 'totally worth it' scenario, I'd say.

Tokyo Rose 26th Jul 2014, 6:10 PM edit delete reply

Doofus is actually pretty safe from that. Clearing the flight path because he got laid is one of the things that customs guards do and nobody looks twice at unless there's a problem. His codes wouldn't have worked at all to get an appointment at the palace office; Ceci set it up with a random code lifted out of the office's user database. Again, nobody's going to look twice unless they have a reason to.
Stormwind13 26th Jul 2014, 6:45 PM edit delete reply

Which eventually they probably WILL have a reason to look at. I mean, prisoner Lynn (changed it to match what Acantha was calling her :-D) disappears from Nova Roma... SOMEONE is getting hunted down for allowing that. :-D
