Ow ow Ow OWWwwwww

ETA: What I think is really telling of Dolly's personality, she is worried about CeCi's mental well being in addition to her physical well being.

EETA: it looks like CeCi took a shot in the face two in the upper chest, and I think all the extra glowing under her skin is the self repair nano's and other mechanisms trying to fix her. Unless those are her internal shields being powered to protect her vitals.

EEETA: and her eyes when she is scanning the internal camera feeds changed colors.

Mental health and stamina is important in the people that are responsible for keeping you from dying, whether those are your surgeon, partners in a dangerous situation, the pilot or driver in charge of a vehicle that you are in or near, or someone else whose conduct materially matters to your survival.
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:29 AM edit delete reply

Your right the glowing lines are a combination of effects ( the grids are her main shield emitters ) coating most of her under body ( below her dermis is a weave of duralloy and tritainium along with a high density magnetic shield. She took several hits from the boys as she cut them down. None of them major.
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:22 AM edit delete reply

Interestingly, Watchdoggy was good to his word .. it was painless, for CeCi.

It's good to see that Watchdoggy and CeCi are getting along. :)

She did. and pretty much ignored them.

She is being quite ubar here :D
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:23 AM edit delete reply

Looks like Dolly gets to go head to head with Nox. I thought that Plasma Caster was fixed when she sparked and got watchdog under control. Please do get her back to A1 before the next round and she tries to take Nox at half power
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:31 AM edit delete reply

The Plasma Caster is working at 100 percent sadly it cant protect the skin on Ceci's hand. it was never meant to.
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:25 AM edit delete reply

Luckily, I'm sure both Calliope and Dr Silver could fix her skin without even straining themselves.

Easy fix. :)
CeCi is not worried.
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Yeah and all that your seeing is just surface damage.
Mark_L_A 11th Sep 2015, 11:22 PM edit delete reply

CeCi is probably using the caster at 100$ power settings. If she used a lower setting the magnetic sheath would probably be enough to protect her dermal covering. At full power however, nope, not going to happen, all the sheath can do is to minimize the damage, not prevent it entirely.
Sheela 12th Sep 2015, 7:03 PM edit delete reply

... at a 100$ power setting ?

Dang, her caster is burning 100 $ bills every time it shoots ?
That's gonna become expensive in the long run!

Here's hoping that Ceci was being truthful and that it is surface damage only.

DLKmusic 11th Sep 2015, 8:38 PM edit delete reply

As a Tech-support professional, Rose, I'm still upset with you For opening up Tech support for Cok-Block™ Batteries!

"Hi, Thank you for calling Cok-Block™ Batteries, How may I help you?"
"Yes, ma'am that is the name of the batteries"
"No, Ma'am, I don't think...."
"Yes, ma'am, I do have one, and no, it's not blocked"
"Yes, Ma'am, it is Very funny. Now, is there something I can actually help you with?"
"I'm sorry ma'am but that is not how our batteries function, but thank you for calling Cok-Block™ Batteries."

Thanks a lot, Rose!
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:31 AM edit delete reply

Ceci is being 100 percent truthful here :D
That one guy 11th Sep 2015, 9:02 AM edit delete reply
Is she also right? Assessing cognitive damage is chancy at best due to the fact that you're assessing damage to your assessment apparatus. Granted, androids probably have some better abilities in that area than humans, but it's a potential blind spot.
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:26 AM edit delete reply

She is probably allright, she has only just scratched the surface of her abilities.
In other words, they haven't strained her, neither physically, nor mentally just yet.

If anything, when she killed her first Gutter, it was a harder affair for her.
That one guy 11th Sep 2015, 5:10 PM edit delete reply
When she killed her first gutter she'd sparked, was in conflict with Watchdog, and was intellectually bothered that she didn't have any kind of moral code (Doc Silver adjusted the last two), so I think that was more the strain than ability loading at that point.
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 9:14 PM edit delete reply

Yes in a nut shell That one guy
Mark_L_A 11th Sep 2015, 11:32 PM edit delete reply

CeCi was "sparked" for Cent Comm's (Her big sister)purposes as soon as she woke up in the box (http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/448 Boot Up). However, she also Broke Through and mainline "Sparked" when Dolly blew up at her outside Rotter's Store in Joleet. (http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/610 Annoying Facts) Otherwise how could she cry? Then when she DID have her conflict when she took down the Gutter she had her first emotional issue with killing which Watchdog couldn't understand. (http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/875 Morals)

Be aware that as Cent and Rose remaster earier pages the URL's may change.
That one guy 13th Sep 2015, 4:46 PM edit delete reply
I'm not clear quite what is entailed in sparking, so not clear on the timeline.

Comic CentCom commented about something weird in the attempt to bring her online (Comic 451 - Um.. glitch? , posted 8th Jan 2008, 1:00 AM, three comics after your first link), which I'm not sure if that was the sparking that was unexpected/undesired for a Black Angel and things grew from there, or if that put her in a weird initial state that allowed a later spark. I'm of the opinion that it was either in the initial programming from your first link or an off-screen event between there and the drive to Joliet (I'd it could've happened during or after the fight, but I agree that her responses with your second link suggest that she'd already sparked, and that was before the fight).
Sheela 13th Sep 2015, 9:43 PM edit delete reply

As I understand it, CeCi was technically sparked from the time CentComm brought her online - But she didn't come out quite right.

On top of that, she has changed quite a bit since then, and one of the major differences, is that she wants to be her own person, and not "part of the CentComm collective", so to speak. The Gutter incident was part of what kicked this into happening, basically, she was trying to understand why her morals didn't work. This created a lot of internal conflict, that Dr Silver fixed.

So by now, she's a bubbly pink haired, snuggly huggly machine .. of DOOM !
Mark_L_A 14th Sep 2015, 12:04 AM edit delete reply

She was originally Sparked when she was first activated by Cent Comm, however her Black Angel Synth brain has overwatch modules, aka Watchdog, which is technically incontrol. When Dolly snapped at her, CeCi's emotional reaction actually allowed her to "Break Through" and Spark the main Synth Brain making it so the Watchdog COULDN'T control her. How else could she cry. Cent confirmed that to me in the comments. of that particular page.

Hence this newly sparked/broken through intelligence when forced to take a life FREAKED out. And Dolly helped her to understand the difference between Killing EVERYTHING and Controlled violence.

Letting CeCi know that she isn't "Bad" when she is forced to take a life, however there ARE limits.

If you wish to discuss this more, I'd be happy to talk it over with you.

anonymous coward 11th Sep 2015, 12:06 PM edit delete reply
I don't know, in many cases gentle care and deft but light touches have a superior result. The chosen tactics of Dolly and Ceci in this situation do more closely resemble a hard and fast penetration though, I grant you.
Sheela 12th Sep 2015, 7:05 PM edit delete reply

JESUS CHRIST! I think I'm looking at the ass end of a 20 millimeter slug in her chest.
I mean, that's enough to take down an elephant with consistency.
Seriously, I think the only thing that could stop her would be a Render rifle or its betters. Even then you have to live to fire it.
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:33 AM edit delete reply

And be able to hit her. Honestly most of this was because she tackled them. Again some of her high speed assault programming isnt online. Just most of it.
Marcus Ramesy 11th Sep 2015, 10:06 AM edit delete reply

and this is why Black Angels are deadly, when they go in to combat mode.. they are the embodiment of armageddon .... in the very unlikely scenario that you find out that you are being hunted by a Black Angel..... your only option is to get off planet and reside on pluto or one of the moons of Jupiter... and sadly.. even that is not far enough.... they will find you... and they will kill you... not something I would ever want to find my self on the receiving end of.
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:28 AM edit delete reply

Probably not a lot of people around that could stand up to a Black Angel.
Marcus Ramesy 11th Sep 2015, 11:43 AM edit delete reply

its not a mater of standing up to them.. they were built to be the ultimate assassin/infiltration with thousands of skills to pull from.. any thing from Nuclear Physics, to cooking and singing, and yes.. sex... they are designed to get in.. quietly, undetected and close to their targets... and... for added measure.. we added advanced weapons, advanced combat algorithms, multiple sensors, obfuscation technology and a combat frame to stand up to any thing but a Mech, and even that might not stop them.

Black Angels, when you absolutely need it dead..... yesterday.
CptKerion 11th Sep 2015, 6:30 PM edit delete reply
... I honestly can only come up with only so many more ways the badguys could be fucked sideways in a nonredundant fashion.

This also makes me really wish I could play in a tabletop game in the Datachasers universe. So much cool stuff, so many cool organizations, so much more practical than most settings I've gotten to play in.
Hell, it's the kind of chance I'd pay one hell of a lot for... once I had, you know, time and money. ie. I wasn't a poor college student.
Haegan2005 11th Sep 2015, 8:07 PM edit delete reply

They have some of the basics already up, it would simply be a matter of assigning stats.

If they have the time, they may even self publish something for gurps or rolemaster. Its a good well thought out universe and I think a lot of people might enjoy it.
Marcus Ramesy 11th Sep 2015, 8:17 PM edit delete reply

(person behind marcus) as A player in the game, it was some of the most amazing storytelling I have had the opportunity to participate in.. both in world building and just in the adventures that we had.. I miss playing in it.. and look forward to playing in it again some day and perhaps dusting off Marcus's character sheet and see what new adventures await me and the the newly reformed NT-SEC

DataChasers rule sets was based off of Spacemaster rules..

I figured as much. It's one of those filed under "experience indirectly since I'd likely never be able to be there." along with most of the good tabletop stories I've ever heard, read, etc.
My own in person stories have a tiny handful of flawed gems hidden amongst a lot of shit (come to think of it I've told about half my stories worth telling in the comments here over the time I've been commenting).
I've actually gotten so rusty at playing in a good game that I'm having to completely relearn how to handle one now that I finally am in a good one using the Stars Without Number system via roll20.net

This is NOT a criticism! I'm sure there are very good shading and shadow reasons for it. But dang, Ceci's head looks like it was popped on a Mattel neck ball in that last image. (I repaired more Barbie dolls than I want to think about in my day. 3 daughters)

CeCi Battle damage assessment: No impact points smoking, shield absorbed most of the force, nano bots repairing 'skin' on right hand and any internal damage received. Shield power level reduced while repairs under way. Dolly needs to take the point until CeCi can boot up to full power. She needs an edged weapon to take on Nox. BTW, where's CeCi's plasma blade? Is it built into her left hand?
Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:36 AM edit delete reply

Good assessment lets see what happens :D
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:37 AM edit delete reply

Well, the smurf that Dolly killed, also had a blade.

Just in case she wants to dualwield. :)
DLKmusic 11th Sep 2015, 8:27 PM edit delete reply

Uhm, didn't we cover that a couple of strips ago? Aren't these weapons DNA encoded?
Mark_L_A 11th Sep 2015, 11:13 PM edit delete reply

I don't think their blades would be DNA Locked. After all if you get down to "NEEDING" your blade, you might have to take the blade of a fallen comrade, so being able to use it without having to recode it should be easy. Or course it might be the electronics are rendered off, but the blade will still function as a blade.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2015, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

The praetorian blades are not power blades note no "SFX " on the blades They are just hellishly sharp duralloy blades. They are not code locked.
Lukkai 11th Sep 2015, 11:17 PM edit delete reply

Guns? Yes.

Swords? We don't know. If that even was a Power blad that is. Quite likely, but it might have been a high quality conventional blade as well.

Centcomm 11th Sep 2015, 4:38 AM edit delete reply

Too keep them from realizing Shes carrying a amped up plasma cannon for a right arm. so a lot of things like shielding had to go. and other nicitys that would have bulked her up and been very obvious to any idiot with a scanner. She might like the bandaids later :D
Sheela 11th Sep 2015, 10:38 AM edit delete reply

Besides, in a world where they can just get her a new arm, a little damage like that isn't so bad.
anonymous coward 11th Sep 2015, 12:09 PM edit delete reply
If that talk of nanobots was accurate and significant she may be designed for self-field-repair, and now that she is in open combat they may be repairing to a different spec than the stealth one.

Stormwind13 13th Sep 2015, 9:20 AM edit delete reply

I agree KarToon. The lighting in the second panel is terrific.

And I'm still concerned that CeCi is going to have to utilize too much of her abilities and burn out. Which would NOT be fine in my book, though CentComm (the EVIL one) would probably find it an acceptable exchange. :-P

There's two ways to respond to this notion: One is to wonder if Ceci's been prioritizing her hair in damage control--and why if so. (It may have sensors that are important, people probably don't examine a gynoid's hair too closely unless they have particular reason or motivation to.) The other is to wonder how she avoided getting it mussed in a battlefield during both melee and ranged combat.
Timotheus 11th Sep 2015, 4:32 PM edit delete reply

Ok, with all the :spoilers: that Cent is being :REDACTED: I think we will see a DIFFERENT Cassian, possibly Noctis coming around the corner with the Nazismurfs.

Remember Noctis HATES humans, why would she willing associate with the detestable Bluebs without firm orders or commands to do so?
DLKmusic 12th Sep 2015, 1:37 AM edit delete reply

Noctis or Nox, Mark? NOX hates humans, but I don't remember anywhere that Noctis does as well... She's actually very "Spockish" about humans as far as I can tell. Also, If it were Noctis, I think CeCi would have recognized her, having already met her.
Mark_L_A 12th Sep 2015, 2:30 AM edit delete reply

You're correct Sir, I meant Nox hating humans. Also Noctis might be being seen through fragmented video, so CeCi might not be able to ID her beyond the fact that she is NOT one of the Bluebs.
Sheela 12th Sep 2015, 7:11 PM edit delete reply

Just because she hates humans, doesn't mean she cannot use them as cannon-fodder.

As I understand it there's a significant technological gap between New Troy and Nova Roma. Also, Ceci's chassis was made last week and Nox's hasn't had an update recently. So, given that the Nox and Ceci are both designed to the limits of the technology available to their respective factions, the advantage in a fight ought to go Ceci's way.
Morituri 11th Sep 2015, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
I find it weird that Ceci ascribes a gender to watchdog. I find it even weirder that she considers it to be specifically male.
Mark_L_A 12th Sep 2015, 2:39 AM edit delete reply

It might have a neutral voice that is neither male nor female when "Talking" to her. She calls it the watchdog and she may think of it as a mean little puppy and most male dogs are more aggressive, so she may be projecting male tendencies to it subconsciously.

After all women are seen as keepers of home and hearth, males are providers and protectors.

Or it could be she thinks anything that blood thirsty like it has been shown to be HAS to be an idiot male and not like her Mommy.

Standard biases: dogs are male, cats are female.
Just ignore any inconvenient plumbing that gets in the way of that. oh wait, virtual. so, no plumbing to get in the way. perfect :)

Ceci's pretty weird in general, let's be honest. :D
velvetsanity 12th Sep 2015, 8:41 AM edit delete reply

She is not!

She's adorably eccentric :D

heh, Come on Velvet :) The girl's a Sparked Black Angel, can you even think of a situation that defines "comes with baggage" better than that?
velvetsanity 13th Sep 2015, 5:08 AM edit delete reply

I stand by my statement. She's not weird, she's adorably eccentric.

Guess it depends on what your frame of reference is. If you live in a world where cute little androids are deadly assassins then CeCi doesn't come across nearly as weird. :-D

Now since the deadly assassin is CeCi, she is by definition ADORABLE. That is her design after all. And since even among deadly assassins, other Black Angels, CeCi is... unique, that makes CeCi eccentric.

So for the world that is represented in Data Chasers, I would have to support velvet here. CeCi is more eccentric than weird, in the framework of the presented world. :-D

I've always considered the difference between Eccentric and Weird was defined by how much money you have, personally!

****Tips glass to the weird, and let's the Eccentric buy the next round****

In today's world, it seems somewhat dehumanizing to refer to a person as "it" (my cousin's wife got irritated at me for using that pronoun with their baby just yesterday, in fact). Considering that it seems that computationally based sapients in the DataChasers world tend to pick and identify with a gender, that tendency might still be in force. So to the degree that Ceci considers watchdog to be an entity of it's own, she might feel it's insulting not to assign it a gender when referring to it. Male seems sufficiently appropriate at that point.

Could it be that since Ceci has accepted herself to be female it would help when she is not in combat mode to accept Watchdog as male? Otherwise it might cause mental issues for her knowing she is both, sort of preventing any schizophrenic imbalance.
