Athena, are those... are those yoga pants?
DLKmusic 10th Jan 2018, 2:06 AM edit delete reply

Yoga Pants? OF COURSE NOT! This is a designer outfit that cost over 10,000 credits. It's entire design is centered around giving off an aura of casual confidence!

....ok, yeah, yoga pants...
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:55 PM edit delete reply

any yoga pants are you imagination.. ":D
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 10:50 AM edit delete reply

That's ok, my imagination is pretty good. :)
It gets a daily workout, at least!
lalverson 10th Jan 2018, 12:05 AM edit delete reply
And in her native language! Well played ambassador Taylor. Solid solid Image!
Lurker314 10th Jan 2018, 12:42 AM edit delete reply
Phht! Anything less, and they would kick her out of the diplomatic corps. It's not some obscure backwater language we are talking about here.
Lurker314 10th Jan 2018, 12:53 AM edit delete reply
The interesting thing to me about the address is that she is NOT commenting on Athena's imminent elevated status. It would appear that she is taking care not to startle her, as it is likely that Acantha has not quite had the bandwidth to realize just how close her royal butt is to sitting on the throne. She's potentially foregoing points for herself by delaying, but clearly this is the right thing to do, both as a person, and for the benefit of New Troy.
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:21 PM edit delete reply

What I found more interesting, was that Acantha recognized Athena in the third panel.

Noctis probably recognizes her too, and is awaiting the inevitable hug. :D
megados 10th Jan 2018, 4:02 PM edit delete reply
At first, I had the idea Lynn was the only reference she made, but yes, it also appears she knows Athena as well. Good eye. Acantha is very well informed, it seems. :D
knuut 15th Jan 2018, 6:01 PM edit delete reply
A senior diplomat hugging the on duty bodyguard of a visiting Head of State? Not likely.
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 9:36 PM edit delete reply
I wonder whether by "know", Acantha just means she has seen Athena in pictures/recordings (very likely, considering Athena's position, and Acantha's interest in politics); or she has actually met her before? The latter would be very intriguing indeed :-)
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 6:01 PM edit delete reply

thank you. and yeah Athena can play the room with a practiced ease.. Shes used to dealing with corps that would rather shoot each other than talk.
megados 10th Jan 2018, 12:26 AM edit delete reply
Lynn and Athena! Finally! Lynn and Acantha have some catching up to do! Maybe they will get to do some sightseeing before long. (I'm kinda surprised Calliope didn't come along)

Athena sometimes reminds me of Lwoxana Troi. She knows her stuff though! Nice introduction.
Just_IDD 10th Jan 2018, 1:43 AM edit delete reply
Now is a really interesting question about who has Stockholm Syndrome and what the good doctor is picking up from empathy.
megados 10th Jan 2018, 10:30 AM edit delete reply
I think both Dr. Demark, and Athena will be able to come to their own conclusions rather quickly. They can then help to inform any evaluation of Lynn's mental state, as well as Acantha's to an extent.
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 9:43 PM edit delete reply
Good point: by evaluating Lynn's feelings when talking about Roma, Dr. Demark should easily be able to rule out Stockholm Syndrome.

On the other hand, when she sees what Lynn feels exactly for Acantha, that *might* get a little bit awkward... :-P

/me ducks for cover
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 6:01 PM edit delete reply

Annnd now you know why Demark is a awesome doctor :D
Lurker314 10th Jan 2018, 12:45 AM edit delete reply
Methinks that Centcom has a diplomatic dressing down in the near future. This looks like the inside of a battleship, not the recovery room of a princess on the verge of being crowned!
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:10 PM edit delete reply

To be fair, when you have a royal guest and want to make *sure* that they are safe, you do put them inside a big honking battleship, yes.
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:57 PM edit delete reply

its more of a vault than a battle ship.. #C does not turn into a giant battle robot that can stomp around the wastes. No really.. it doesn't.
megados 10th Jan 2018, 6:39 PM edit delete reply
LOL! But that would be SO COOL! :D
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:06 AM edit delete reply

Awwww ... *looks at Centcomm with sad puppy eyes* ... why would you destroy my dreams like that ?

I mean, it has legs 'n' everything, and ... wait, how about flying ?
Can it fly like the Helios Tower did in my skit on Comic 982 - Two of Coins ?
robnot 11th Jan 2018, 11:31 AM edit delete reply
like megados said "that would be so cool." a really big SDF-1 ore a castle of lions,, ? but who wood play the last 2..???
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 1:53 PM edit delete reply

Oh! oh, oh oh me ! Me me me me ME !
Please pick me, oh, oh .. me !
*bounces up and down excitedly*
Can I upgrade it too ? Oh please, please, please, let me do upgrades! :D
HiFranc 11th Jan 2018, 7:40 PM edit delete reply

I giggled at that image.
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:26 PM edit delete reply

Yeah but .. it's a Castle made of Lions !!
That's like a doggy's wet dream, how could I possibly resist ?

I could comb their manes, paint their claws, add bowties to them 'n' everything !!! :D
robnot 12th Jan 2018, 12:05 PM edit delete reply
what is your reference "made of"?? all of my anime refer to "of" .. the castle is actually a spaceship.. that happens to hold the lions..
an fyi i have all 3 versions.. SO i wood really love to get the "fourth" ..!!!
Sheela 12th Jan 2018, 7:45 PM edit delete reply

You literally said "a castle of lions". :)
robnot 13th Jan 2018, 12:01 PM edit delete reply
..?? yes..?? the ship it's called a "Castle of Lions." an it's over 10,000 years old...
megados 13th Jan 2018, 1:50 PM edit delete reply
This, I think, is what robnot is referring to.
robnot 15th Jan 2018, 11:02 AM edit delete reply
@ Sheela: ohhh,, word play.. i missed that... u meant " a castle made of lions..." durrr ..
tho ,, i was looking for the "castle made of lions." ..
Boren 15th Jan 2018, 12:09 AM edit delete reply
I don't know..it's often not a good idea to be inside a vault, underground is not always a better future...
robnot 15th Jan 2018, 11:10 AM edit delete reply
@ Boren: umm yeah,, just look at all the Vault-tec failures...
IRL. 90% of the home cold war bunkers were where you could go an die,, already buried. they were not meant to be survivable....
Sheela 15th Jan 2018, 5:52 PM edit delete reply

Ah yes, a bit of word play often happens around me. Heck, sometimes I even takes Centcomm's words for gospels.

On a sidenote, imagine a spaceship full of lions, and you are the only eadible thing around ? Yeah, I don't think that would be a good thing. >_<
Just_IDD 17th Jan 2018, 12:03 AM edit delete reply
If you want to see more professional reuse, search "silo homes".
Fairportfan 10th Jan 2018, 1:15 AM edit delete reply

Ummm - "Sire"?

"Lord", yes.

You ADDRESS the King, whatever, as "Sire", yes ...

But in this context {speaking of him in the third person}, "sire" means "father.
DLKmusic 10th Jan 2018, 2:16 AM edit delete reply

@Fairportfan: First time I read this I thought she was offering condolences for Decimus, and was kinda confused.

The condolences are for Valerius, who was indeed Acantha's father. "Sire" would be correct usage.

PS. Awesome new avatar! I approve!
Timotheus 10th Jan 2018, 5:50 AM edit delete reply

It's the Adventures of Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur. (There. I finally got the obvious reference out of my system.)
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:12 PM edit delete reply

I think she s making condolences towards Acantha's father.

That way she manages to be both personal and intimate with Acantha.
Lurker314 11th Jan 2018, 12:29 AM edit delete reply
Ahh, but you miss the juiciest part! No mention of Prince Douchbag! In diplomateze, this is an insult of the highest order. I seriously doubt that that her Highness missed the omission. And is smiling on the inside.
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 6:00 PM edit delete reply

Nailed it guys . well done!
Robijn 12th Jan 2018, 5:46 AM edit delete reply
Indeed Ummmm :
The word sire in the horse world is usually used in place of father. A horse's father is the sire, and so is the horse's male parent. A foal's sire then is the stallion who was bred to the mare to produce that foal. It is impossible for a mare to be a sire, as sire only refers to the male antecedents of a horse.
Lurker314 10th Jan 2018, 1:40 AM edit delete reply
Noctis and her horse stance. Sheesh! If she were human, I would be REALLY worried for her health about now. At some point, however, a guard's duties extend beyond the mere physical. This constant outward display of tension is not helpful to Acantha's emotional health. Let's go for a rational assessment of all the possible sources of harm to the princess, hmmm?
megados 10th Jan 2018, 10:24 AM edit delete reply
I can't help but see this differently. To Noctis, right now, there is no concern or duty more important than keeping Acantha safe. She and her charge are in potentially hostile territory as Noctis sees it, and she is constantly at the ready. She is doing exactly what she should be doing as a competent bodyguard. I don't think it bothers Acantha; she is used to being around Cassians.

Her duties do extend beyond the physical, as she is Princeps of the Cassians. Tennyo is acting Princeps in her absence, and is assuming Noctis' role in NR until her return. :D
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:14 PM edit delete reply

Don't forget that she's an android, she is NOT human.
PaulRein 10th Jan 2018, 4:24 PM edit delete reply
From what I have seen, Noctis has a very…economical body language in general. Unless there is some specific reason to move or change position she sees no need to do it. She is in a ready position, she can see the entire room, she has no reason to move. Her muscles do not fatigue as humans would

As for making Acantha nervous, I don't think so. Acantha is used to see the Cassians in a bodyguard role and probably expects her to be constantly vigilant. (Also, as New Rome raised, she mostly sees Noctis as a machine, a machine that can be ignored as long as it does its job, in this case being a watchdog.)
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:58 PM edit delete reply

Very astute observation Paul and yes sheela you are right.
Ictuan 11th Jan 2018, 7:13 PM edit delete reply
I'd love to know what Noctis was thinking of Athena in that last panel. To the way Noctis was looking at Athena was almost like saying "alrighty then, that's a little over the top." Maybe with a little "don't twitch wrong if you decide to hug anyone" thrown in.
Sheela 12th Jan 2018, 7:47 PM edit delete reply

"Don't judo-throw the hugging diplomat."
CptKerion 13th Jan 2018, 12:29 PM edit delete reply
Given the degree that Acantha trusts and is likely used to Noctis, I suspect Noctis being around and on ready might even be reassuring. Especially given the nature of her childhood and some likely deep seeded trust issues thanks to it.
Sheela 15th Jan 2018, 5:54 PM edit delete reply

I dunno, I suspect that Acantha don't trust Noctis any further than she can throw her.

Mind you, that may still be a lot further than she trusts most of Decimus' old chronies.
megados 15th Jan 2018, 6:40 PM edit delete reply
Really, @Sheela? Hmm, I would have guessed differently. She has been around Noctis all her life. I would guess she knows of Noctis' core directives, and would consider her reassuring as a protector, and more or less transparent as a person in the room, due to androids in general in NR being considered as 'equipment'. I might be way off base though.
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 9:48 PM edit delete reply
I don't remember any indications that Acantha has actually been around Noctis all that much in the past?...
megados 15th Jan 2018, 10:20 PM edit delete reply
Sixteen years in the Black Palace with Noctis around doesn't count as being around Noctis? No, it has not been specifically stated that Acantha and Noctis hung out regularly, but I'm pretty sure Acantha knows Noctis.
antrik 16th Jan 2018, 4:49 AM edit delete reply
Knows, sure -- superficially at least... Trusts? Most likely to some extent, since she knows the Cassians' role in general -- but I wouldn't bet on her having much trust in Noctis's judgement etc., unless she knows her much more than superficially, which is not a given IMHO.
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 9:52 PM edit delete reply
@PaulRein might be just a trick of perspective I guess: but it does look to me like Noctis was actually more relaxed in the second panel, and only tensed up again in reaction to Athena?...
Sheela 16th Jan 2018, 3:00 AM edit delete reply

She had been around Decimus all her life too, and she certainly didn't trust him.

As far as I understood it, Acantha tried to avoid all Cassians as much as possible.
megados 16th Jan 2018, 10:03 AM edit delete reply
LOL touché! No, I don't mean that simply being around someone equates to trust; Dec was a madman and Acantha's being around him really solidified her image of him. She was right not to trust him.

Yes it's true that she avoided Cassians in general because they were, after all, more or less puppets controlled by the madman described above.

My point now, though, is that she more than likely understands that the Cassians are for intents and purposes now in her service, and she logically should also know that they are not likely to harm her. Noctis' deferral to her comment about Noctis not wearing black in her hospital room should have informed her that Noctis was trying to do what she ordered. Further, Noctis' refusal to go against the Doctor's orders should inform her that Noctis was acting in her best interests. Acantha is intelligent, and logically she should be able to work out that Noctis is acting in a way beneficial toward Acantha's good. Because of that, I think Acantha would give her at least tentative trust. :D
antrik 17th Jan 2018, 10:50 AM edit delete reply
Well, Noctis *did* find ways to subvert Decimus's command; so the fact she is a Cassian doesn't mean she can automatically be trusted absolutely...

Though on the flip side, Acantha only knows of this if Maxus told her -- in which case he surely also told her that Noctis's subversion was in Acantha's favour...
megados 17th Jan 2018, 11:13 AM edit delete reply
I doubt Acantha knows of this; there wasn't time or inclination for Maxus to have informed her in the short time before Acantha was stabbed.

From our (the readers) POV, we know what Noctis did, and why she did it. We can't really expect Acantha to know all of this.
antrik 17th Jan 2018, 12:23 PM edit delete reply
I find it quite possible -- maybe even likely -- that Acantha has had contact with Maxus since she woke up from surgery...
megados 17th Jan 2018, 12:57 PM edit delete reply
Really? Hmm, I would bet that Noctis has, but I am not sure that Acantha has spoken directly with Maxus. If she has, it would have been with Noctis present, so either they didn't discuss it, or the whole story would have been presented, and the nuance would also have been shared.
Rashala 10th Jan 2018, 3:22 AM edit delete reply

Loss of her dad, cause let's face it NO ONE is gonna miss deci! Cept those assassins who never got a chance.
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:15 PM edit delete reply

Oh c'mon, they never missed Decimus, their aim was better than that.
They just never got the order to take him down.
kraznor 10th Jan 2018, 9:23 AM edit delete reply
In that last panel is Noctis thinking please don't hug me, please don't hug me, please don't hug me, please don't hug me, please don't hug me, please don't hug me......
Sheela 10th Jan 2018, 2:17 PM edit delete reply

Oh, it's gonna happen, that's almost for sure.
That said, I don't think Noctis is as hug-phobic as Centcomm.
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:59 PM edit delete reply

Hugs? what a waste of time..
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:09 AM edit delete reply

A waste of time indeed.

But if someone else wants to indulge in hugging,
Noctis would probably be indifferent at best about it.
megados 11th Jan 2018, 5:08 PM edit delete reply
Indifferent to those she knows, probably. She would be suspicious of those she doesn't, and people she doesn't like, or she mistrusts, would never get that far, I'm guessing.
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:28 PM edit delete reply

I'd dare say that if Acantha knows of Athena, Noctis knows of her as well.
megados 12th Jan 2018, 12:55 AM edit delete reply
Yep, that's true :D
Greenwood Goat 10th Jan 2018, 9:45 AM edit delete reply
"Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake/ Clap your hooves and do a little shake!"

>:=)>
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:59 PM edit delete reply

LOL!
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:13 AM edit delete reply

Curiously, Ladybugs are one of the few living insects in the Datachasers universe that can go toe-to-toe with a Murderturd in a one-on-one fight.

Big, honking mutated insects with a crazy thick shell, they are about 3 metric tonnes of angry and destruction.

And when they graze, they eat about a football field of grass each day - I shudder to think what would happen if those bugs ever decided to form a swarm!

And then .. they twerk!
Timotheus 11th Jan 2018, 4:57 PM edit delete reply

Um, you do know that Lady Bugs are carnivores and eat aphids?
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:44 PM edit delete reply

Omnivores actually, hence why I says "when they graze".

But yeah, they do prey too ... on Giant rats!
I know, I know, it's a messed up ecosystem.
mjkj 12th Jan 2018, 3:02 AM edit delete reply

You forgot the http:// in that url, Sheela ;)
Sheela 12th Jan 2018, 7:41 PM edit delete reply

So I did, it has been fixed. :)
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 10:02 PM edit delete reply
@Sheela you sure you don't mean the sabertoothed rats, as seen in "Wild Kingdom..."? (currently at http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/615/ )

Which means they are actually competing for food with the murderturds...
Sheela 16th Jan 2018, 3:04 AM edit delete reply

Everything in the wastes *is* competing for food with the Murderturds!
Either that, or they *are* food for the Murderturds.

Frankly, Murderturds eat so much that they are competition for everything, even herbivores.
mjkj 10th Jan 2018, 10:01 AM edit delete reply

Great to see Acantha doing and being well =D

*lol* nice override of Noctis there, Acantha =P ;)

Nice entrance, Athena...

...and even in Lamod =P
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 5:59 PM edit delete reply

hehe thanks MJKJ!
mjkj 12th Jan 2018, 3:02 AM edit delete reply

You are welcome =)
Siren 10th Jan 2018, 3:59 PM edit delete reply
Pfft, why would anyone think that? I'm not sure CentComm would recognize a cheery aesthetic.

She probably thinks high-security, safe quarters ARE comforting to a person who was nearly murdered recently.
Centcomm 10th Jan 2018, 6:00 PM edit delete reply

they arent?
Sheela 11th Jan 2018, 11:15 AM edit delete reply

They are.

But then, they could dress up a corner with a few soft panels, a beanbag, and a nice datapad. :)

Athena has master the fine art of Irish diplomacy.
Telling someone to go to HELL in such a way that they look forward to the trip!
antrik 15th Jan 2018, 10:05 PM edit delete reply
I have no doubt Athena has mastered that art -- but I fail to see how this page relates to that?...
Ebonbolt 15th Jan 2018, 11:00 PM edit delete reply

Said art also includes the ability to say "screw that douchebag sideways" without mentioning or referencing him at all. Insult by omission.

I see Lynn has managed to find something more modest for this visit... ;-)
