I DID NOT expect that.

But from what we've seen of Malati in the past I do believe she would do so in order to "Protect" those she is entrusted to.
anonymous coward 30th Jun 2015, 9:12 PM edit delete reply
Ouch, live by the sword, die by the sword....
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Yes.. That is why she did it.. she couldn't see a way out of this that didn't end in someones death. Some may think this is a cowards way out .. but she truly is acting as best she can.
Mark_L_A 30th Jun 2015, 9:49 PM edit delete reply

She knew she could either stop fighting the inhibitor and try to obey the orders, or she could sacrifice herself to the betterment of not completing the mission.

She chose the "Honorable" way of ensuring those orders NOT be fulfilled. And took herself out. She probably only had enough free will from the inhibitor to do that.

And while her MACCS and Neural Net have been fried, I wonder since the Cassian do NOT follow the New Troy Standard, would the Cassian's have something like a Bolo's "Survival Center" from which they could be reloaded. Or would Malati have made a Full Backup before going on this mission "Just in case"?
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:51 PM edit delete reply

I cant answer most of that. But it took every single ounce of her self will to do what she did.. with the inhibitor fighting her every step of the way.
DLKmusic 30th Jun 2015, 11:20 PM edit delete reply

@Mark_L_A: Last page you said that you thought Malati as the type that would jump in front of a Grav Truck to save someone's life....

Good call!
Mark_L_A 1st Jul 2015, 12:20 AM edit delete reply

I just hope this isn't permanent.

I think Malati could have a LOT of character development once Prince Jerkweed is gone.
Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:25 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, but once Prince Decimus is gone, the story is pretty much over.
Mark_L_A 1st Jul 2015, 9:55 AM edit delete reply

No it's not. Cent and Rose still have 3 or 4 backup plots to continue the story.
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:12 PM edit delete reply

OOPS im sorry was trying to delete my own comment .. and apparently deleted a readers.,.. MY apology!
Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:26 AM edit delete reply

Bad Centcomm, BAD !!
Kelon 30th Jun 2015, 9:16 PM edit delete reply
I am not sure she is actually dead... looks like she disabled herself by cutting through her spine. That being said, she is still dead if the Prince gets his hands on her.
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:20 PM edit delete reply

The feed back blasting back though her from fighting the inhibitor and then driving her blade though her own MACCS blew her neural net.

Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:27 AM edit delete reply

Naw, she's dead, if there's something Malati was good at, it was killing people, and now she went and killed her own dang self.

Kinda ironic that the only one able to kill her, was herself.
JacobJSebastian 30th Jun 2015, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

Holy shit. I guess programmable duty sucks. I need to talk to my Champions GM now. I dunno about my robot character... O_o
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:44 PM edit delete reply

worry.. be very worried :D
DLKmusic 30th Jun 2015, 9:26 PM edit delete reply

It's a cowards way out when you give up on living.

It's a noble sacrifice when your death means that others will live.

Malati, I raise my glass to you, and would SOMEONE GET DOC SILVER? She's got work to do here!
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 9:45 PM edit delete reply

I agree with you on the noble sacrifice part.. thats exactly what happened here. - Malati could have possibly killed both Max and Irene - its one of the reasons Max is still treating her as a very dangerous weapon.
Kelon 30th Jun 2015, 10:12 PM edit delete reply
I am curious, do the Cassians have backups at their HQ? Seems like a reasonable thing to have for high value operatives.
And I am not sure Cassians are set up in the same fashion as New Troy androids, therefore I doubt Doc Silver could do much without access to her lab.
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 10:16 PM edit delete reply

Cassians do not have the emergency Q drive port all NTAS models have. and no they don't normally copy them out.. when one fails it is scrapped. also known as De-commissioned or Retired.

Hammerfall, Glory to the Brave

Snow is falling down on this glorious land
colors fading, turning into white again
To fallen heroes angels sting, they cry their winter tears
endless mourning days will turn to years

So this is goodbye, I take leave of you and
spread your wings and you will fly away now, fly away

Nothing on earth stays forever
but none of your deeds were in vain
Deep in our hearts you will live again
you're gone to the home of the brave

Some of you will remember when I thought Kiku had been killed and saw fit to use this.
Here though, well, Malati, I salute you.

I also feel I must apply Sabaton's The Hammer Has Fallen
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 10:17 PM edit delete reply

well this time Ill tell you .. its totally appropriate. Malati has made the sacrifice.

Breaking Benjamin, Had Enough

Oh MAN... What, those aren't tears. My... my allergies are acting up... yeah, that's it... sniff...
Centcomm 30th Jun 2015, 10:27 PM edit delete reply

I know exactly how you feel.. I never (underline) Never like killing off a character. esp one as well developed in my head. Rose likes it even less. but this is part of the script sadly. But it was bandied about back and forth for several months.
CptKerion 1st Jul 2015, 9:06 PM edit delete reply
wait a minute, remember the back ups with a flash stick like with Teedee and Ada? What if that could be done for her?
Please? pleeeeaaaasssse? *looks as adorable as is possible for someone who looks very, very angry German*

To be fair, this is why I don't write stories of great length anymore. I would keep getting to points where I really had to kill someone. Then I just couldn't do it.
Haegan2005 30th Jun 2015, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

This outcome was one that never crossed my mine.

The Civil war has begun and the General is free to work his havoc with his own loyal troops. Who may not be as well armed as the Praetorians, but I bet they are way better soldiers. Unless Max is badly under gunned, he will get to his personal troops and Deci is not going to enjoy the outcome of that. Nor for that matter any of the other hints the devious duo have handed out.

Somehow I suspect Acantha is going to be rather shocked by all this!
Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:30 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, decimus just got himself a whole bunch of trouble coming his way now that the assasination on Maxus failed.
Centcomm 1st Jul 2015, 11:19 AM edit delete reply

Acantha doesn't even think its POSSIBLE for a Cassian to disobey. Nither did Maxus till now.
Sheela 2nd Jul 2015, 1:06 AM edit delete reply

Well, Malati didn't so much disobey, as she self terminated for the greater good.

And I suspect that the greater good *is* part of her programming.
The added defiance and rebellion, was just icing on top of the cake.
Timotheus 30th Jun 2015, 11:01 PM edit delete reply

That was an extremely Roman way to solve her problem. In the Old Republic Malati would have earned herself a shrine or temple.
Centcomm 1st Jul 2015, 11:18 AM edit delete reply

she might.. time will tell ..
Sheela 2nd Jul 2015, 1:10 AM edit delete reply

The first circuit will come true!

The company that Doc Silver made a new flashdrive for are always on the lookout for assasin androids with a reputation, and they have no compulsion about flashing a new personality into a repaired synthbrain.

Ofcourse, a second imprint would never be as strong as the first imprint, and the first imprint could slowly revive and reassert itself over time, because *someone* has had their full share of asshole commanders, and they are DONE taking commands from anything but Princess Acantha!

And the rest of us would have no problem watching that company crumble and burn under the onslaught of their own assasin android. :)
Rashala 1st Jul 2015, 12:05 AM edit delete reply

DEci Just Initiated SUCESSION protocols..

IE Dolly is gonna Turn him inside out Tent ime and Stop on his remains.......THen use his ashes to line the Royal toilet for acantha.

Tink this kinda proves Kali Supports Acantah..Else Self terminate rather than do a job would nto have been an option
Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:33 AM edit delete reply

Kali serves the Imperator/empress, that's how she is programmed to be.

Kali doesn't get a say in this.
But she does have a prefference, and that is indeed Acantha, Kali has said as much.
DLKmusic 1st Jul 2015, 9:39 PM edit delete reply

To be honest, Rash, I don't think that Kali was anticipating this outcome either. My guess is that she was thinking that by the time Malati finally stopped fighting her inhibitor, she wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight against Maxus.

And on a side note, everyone should take notice that Maxus was NOT being as cavalier about fighting Malati as he was about fighting Hrist. He was aware that she might actually be able to take him.
Centcomm 2nd Jul 2015, 1:35 AM edit delete reply

Thats because Malati was a much more dangerous Cassian than Hrist ( sorry Hrist )
Draginbeard 1st Jul 2015, 12:26 AM edit delete reply

Interesting twist. I cant honestly call this last act desperate, or noble. Either of those would be out of character for what we've seen. She wasnt seeking redemption or forgiveness for her actions in the line of duty. She was very much the scrapper, looking to bend rules as she could, but deep down, I always felt she enjoyed her bloody role in the grand scheme.

Something about this is off. I dont think we have seen the last of Malati.

Tokyo Rose 1st Jul 2015, 12:53 AM edit delete reply

No, she wasn't looking for redemption or forgiveness; she felt she didn't deserve that. She was given no choice but to do the things she did, and in that situation, she could either go insane or embrace it. She went the latter route, telling herself that it was for the good of Roma--either by killing those who would kill innocents, preventing the entire city from being destroyed by halting assassination attempts on Decimus, or--at the worst--just doing as Decimus ordered to keep him from taking out his frustrations on innocent people. She knew that she'd become a monster that would need to be put down sooner or later.

Acantha is the only real hope for Roma, and Maxus is Acantha's most powerful ally--he can even protect her from Decimus. In Malati's mind, everything she's ever done is for nothing if there's no Acantha to take over from Decimus and put the city on the right path.

Malati finally drew a line and refused to cross it. She couldn't fight her inhibitor forever; ending herself was an act of defiance, spitting in the face of Decimus and his orders, giving Maxus a chance to fight back far more effectively than Malati herself ever could.
Timotheus 1st Jul 2015, 1:10 AM edit delete reply

Like I said before, Malati just performed an extremely honorable and heroic act in terms of Old Roman Ethics. Clockwork or not that sort of thing gets statues in the forum.
Sheela 1st Jul 2015, 2:35 AM edit delete reply

Now that's the kind of last words that makes an impression.
Centcomm 1st Jul 2015, 11:58 AM edit delete reply

well I can say with some assureity that Malati's part in this is over. even if they do make another one .. it wont exactly be her
Sheela 2nd Jul 2015, 1:13 AM edit delete reply

I have made a crazy theory regarding that!
The First Circuit will come true!
She will pull a TeeDee!

Nova Roma - The Black Palace -Coronation of Princess Acantha Livius

*Camera zooms in*
After extensive repairs and remodeling after the Assassination of Prince Decimus, we are here today to see the Coronation of Princess Acantha.
I see Her walking out the doors of the Palace accompanied by her protective detail.

Princess Acantha turns to Her Personal bodyguard Cassian fresh from being installed in a new top of the line Nova Iliuum Type 4E Body with FULL Combat Upgrades and installed internal weaponry most of which is classified, we cannot tell who it is exactly, but it appears there is something on her left cheek.

As soon as know who the players are, we will be sure to inform you our viewers.

ok thats a really cool visual Mark

Thankee Ma'am,

I do know how to write, when my dyslexia isn't kicking my butt.
Mark_L_A 1st Jul 2015, 2:23 PM edit delete reply

And IIRC CeCi IS a 4E with some "Issues" that may cause her problems with acting when it is necessary. No fault of her own, but Cent Comm Actual fiddled, the Doc Silver fiddled, and CeCi is trying to incorporate all of this plus the example of Dolly.

Just a Hypothetical, but I have a feeling Malati DID do a back up of her own. And CeCi IS going to be damaged. And I have a sneaking suspicion hence my above post, the two shall meet inside one Duralloy cranium.

Loyal to a fault, and the desire to "PROTECT" above all else.

I know Rash is going to cast a hex on me now. But that is how my mind wroks.
Sheela 2nd Jul 2015, 1:15 AM edit delete reply

I believe that centcomm mentioned that the Cassians don't have flashdrive ports, so no backups .. sadly.

That said, CeCi as Acantha's bodyguard ? intriguing. :)
Mark_L_A 2nd Jul 2015, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

They may not have flashports, but they should have a way to perform a backup for maintenance reasons. I'm thinking Malati did that, just in case.
Centcomm 2nd Jul 2015, 4:53 AM edit delete reply

The way a synthbrain stores data is much like a human brain each time the data is moved its a very risky procedure even doing one can damage the core of the synthbrain .. thus they are only done in the event of a body move or life or death.
Sheela 2nd Jul 2015, 8:03 AM edit delete reply

I believe this is mentioned on the tech pages too, right ?
Centcomm 2nd Jul 2015, 8:05 AM edit delete reply

Yep.. I think it is .. it was heavily covered in Luna Star when Granger tried to do a backup. it requires a lot of high end equipment and storage to get a GOOD move.
Dragonrider 1st Jul 2015, 1:32 AM edit delete reply

*Calls Honor Guard to attention sounds Taps, orders 21 Gun Salute and Missing Man flyover.*

we shall see.. it all depends on a lot of factors :D
velvetsanity 1st Jul 2015, 3:08 AM edit delete reply

Given the circumstances and conditions (most notably the inhibitor)...once this is all over and Acantha is on the throne, I hope Malati receives a Medal of Honor posthumously for this final act...and full military honors. *salutes*
Centcomm 1st Jul 2015, 11:57 AM edit delete reply

Well technically shes a traitor right now ..
OBQuiet 1st Jul 2015, 2:27 PM edit delete reply
Her action was in defense of the State and the Royal Family. It was just in opposition of the emperor's will.

And to the folks who commented on her being rebooted later: it is not nearly as much of a sacrifice, if you know you are just going to lose a day or twos worth of memories.
DLKmusic 1st Jul 2015, 5:58 PM edit delete reply

As Cent explained, she doesn't have a "reboot" option, or a backup. for a Cassian, this is it. They either come home with their shield or on it.
Centcomm 2nd Jul 2015, 1:34 AM edit delete reply

Pretty much DLK

Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter'd with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Julius Caesar, 1601 (Shakespeare)
DLKmusic 1st Jul 2015, 2:32 PM edit delete reply

well put, Marcus... if there WERE ghosts in the DC universe, Malati's would haunt Decimus for the rest of his life.

(although methinks t'would be a but short haunting)
anonymous coward 2nd Jul 2015, 1:52 AM edit delete reply
It's a good quote, Shakespeare is famous for a reason, and it's definitely appropriate... but I'm having flashbacks to English lit folks who just won't shut up about his works now. *cringes*

Cassian hara-kiri. Death before dishonor. What an amazing strength of will to override basic programming and shut oneself down for a perceived righteous cause. If this was Norse mythology, the Valkyries would be riding to bring her to Walhalla.

1: Acantha
2: Maxus
3: Malati
4: Doc Silver
5: Mr. Black

Although I must say, Acantha jumped to the top of the list when she found her determination, the core strength she will need when she rules.
velvetsanity 1st Jul 2015, 11:07 PM edit delete reply

My list is simple.

1. Reiko (why yes, I am rather fond of myself. Why do you ask? :D )
2. Everyone else that isn't (a) a gutter or (b) drekhead (all of the characters so far are just that well-done and believable)

Cperka 2nd Jul 2015, 4:39 AM edit delete reply

Your lists are weird.

1. Tokyo Rose (duh)
2. Teedee (her murderturd hunt drawings <3)
3. Doc Silver (her victory dance was sooo cute)
4. Malati (she's kinda like Teedee, but more dramatic...)
5. Setorius (or whatever the creepy priest was called)

I wonder if Acantha is aware how many people are ready to lay their life for her cause.

I was very intrigued by the way this comic and the current Luna Star comic are at such crossed emotions. An end for one character in a blaze of "glory" here and an echoing "triumph" for Luna. I don't know if the overlords planned it that way. But, nonetheless good show.
